Interviewing for a job posted to CraigsList tomorrow. Part-time bookkeeper at a law firm. Wish me luck!

Marchesa is getting the hang of being around people. She’s learned to tell us when she’s hungry, and when she wants someone to play with her, and when she just wants some petting.

She still hasn’t realized that she can also call us for help.

She’s developed the habit of sneaking in behind me when I go into the master bedroom. Sometimes I’ll just step in to put away my hairbrush or get my shoes, and then leave again without realizing she’s darted under the bed. And I close the door behind me.

All the cats I’ve known till now, when locked in a room, would set up a caterwauling until someone came to let them out. Marchesa doesn’t say anything, she just tries to pull the door open by herself. It’s not that she doesn’t talk—she’s a very chatty little cat, and talks to us constantly. It just doesn’t seem to occur to her that people would be a source of help, or that they would come assist her if she called.

Fortunately The Director’s room is across the hall from ours. Yesterday he heard her scratching at the door and let her out. Then she started talking, greeting him and telling him it was dinner time. I hope she figures out how to say something when she needs a hand. People can be very useful for things like that.

The Artist has finished his first week of college, and he’s loving it. I offered to give him a ride the first week, but he wanted to take the bus from day one. He wants to be as self-sufficient as possible. I can relate to that.

Yesterday I went in to Kelly (a temp agency, for those outside the US) and took a bunch of their skill assessment tests. They might have a bookkeeping job for me that uses Quickbooks, but I took all the tests they were willing to give me. I figured if I did poorly on them I just wouldn’t get jobs involving those skills. But I did reasonably well on all of them (and very well on some).

The Kelly rep gave me all the tax forms and such to fill out, and an employee handbook to look over. I take this as a good sign. Even if I don’t get this Quickbooks job, they might be able to find me something else. I hope.

Michelle Bachman, republican and champion of the religious right, has declared her position against the national health care proposal:

“That’s why people need to continue to go to the town halls, continue to melt the phone lines of their liberal members of Congress,” said Bachmann, “and let them know, under no certain circumstances will I give the government control over my body and my health care decisions.”

…so, does this mean she’s pro-choice now?

Turns out we just needed a form from the insurance agency that officially verified the kid was covered, even though he wasn’t a driver. We got the form and trekked back up to the DMV this morning.

He passed.

My son now has a driver’s license.

Our school system has a web system that lets parents track their kids’ progress. This way we can check the kid’s grades online even if they don’t bring home their report cards or tell us how they’re doing on their assignments. They call it SPAN (Student Parent Access Network).

Last week in the mail I got a letter from The Director’s school with his class schedule and the login information for his SPAN account. I made a copy of his schedule so he’d have one and I’d have one, and then went to log in to his SPAN account.

Oops. That’s not my kid.

Looks like I got the SPAN information of the kid who’s right ahead of mine, alphabetically. So the family whose last name comes right after ours probably got my kid’s info, and so on.

I bet the poor SPAN administrator is swamped with e-mails. And he’s about to get another one.

LISTEN IF YOU NO THAT YOU ARE NOT DEAD GET BACK IMMEDIETLY

I did not get back to them, because I’m not sure whether or not I’m dead. It’s all so existential, really.

A couple of people have asked about yesterday’s post—specifically, Alpha Geek rescuing the cat.

One of Marchesa’s favorite toys is the cat-fishing pole. If you don’t have a cat, picture a toy fishing pole with a big bunch of feathers at the end of the string. Some cats aren’t all that into these; I tried to entice Phurball with one, and he was pretty much “meh.” But Marchesa goes nuts for her cat-fishing pole. She used to be afraid of The Artist (he’s just so damn BIG), until they both discovered a mutual enjoyment of the cat-fishing pole: she loves to play with it, and he loves to dangle it for her.

Yesterday one of the boys left the cat-fishing pole out on the coffee table. I try to prevent this; if I find it out I put it away, or remind the kids to do so. I don’t want her playing with it unsupervised, because she could get tangled up in the string.

Which is exactly what happened yesterday. She found it, she played with it, she got her left hind leg all tangled up in the string. She was panic-stricken. The thing was chasing her, and it had her leg, and it was noisy, and she couldn’t get away from it! She pelted from one side of the house to another, upstairs and downstairs, trying to escape. The Director reported that her tail was as big around as a Coke can.

Finally Alpha Geek and The Director were able to corner her and hold her long enough to cut the string and free her.

By the time The Artist and I got home, the crisis was over and Marchesa was on the couch recovering from her fright. I had a talk with the boys about making sure to put the toy away when they’re done playing, for Marchesa’s sake. I think knowing it’s a safety issue for our little cat will motivate them to remember.

Now I need to get a new cat-fishing pole.

Today I took The Artist to take his driver’s test and get his actual license. He was ready. He was eager.

He was uninsured.

We called our insurance company when he got his learner’s permit, and they said he was covered under our existing policy and didn’t need to be specifically named as a driver until he got the real license. However, it turns out the DMV won’t even let him test until he’s specifically named on our car insurance as a driver.

So we trudged back out of the DMV.

On the way home, I detoured into the mall. “We’ll assuage our disappointment with Orange Julius,” I told him.

“Assuage?”

“Mitigate. Smooth over,” I clarified. “Kiss it and make it better. The problem with having a writer for a mom is that I use words like assuage and ubiquitous in everyday conversation.”

“What’s ubiquitous?” he laughed.

“Means it’s everywhere.” I was getting out my cell phone.

“Oh, so God is ubiquitous.”

“Right.” I dialed Alpha Geek. “He couldn’t take the test today. We didn’t have our 27B/6 form.”

“What?” (I was surprised he missed the reference, but I learned later that he’d been busy rescuing the cat.)

“He has to be on our insurance before he can take the test. We’re going to Orange Julius, do you want anything?”

He didn’t. We got our Orange Julius drinks, and pretzels from the Pretzel Twister, and eventually we felt suitably assuaged and came home.

To be honest, I’m a bit relieved. Because as soon as he gets his license, you know which car he’ll be driving most? My baby.

Spam Ahoy

I dunno if there’s an overall increase in comment spam, or if my blog has gotten linked somewhere and picked up some attention, but my comment spam has doubled in the last week.

Of course, what that means is that I’m now getting two spams per week instead of one, and Akismet is still catching them all before you see them. If this is the price I pay to have more people pay attention to me, I can live with it.

Oh FFS

I am so tired of applying to Craigslist job ads, only to find out they’re some form of scam.

For example, the response I got today included an “application form” (red flag #1—when they want you to fill out another application, either via e-mail or on a web form, it’s generally a scam). The form included a lot of extraneous information about what their fictitious company supposedly does (red flag #2), then went into the job description. The second item said I would be depositing receivables into my own bank account and then transferring them to the company.

Yeah. I’ll get right on that.

tomato

My first tomato turned red enough to eat over the weekend. (I planted ‘em a bit late.) I’ve got eight or ten more green ones in various stages.

I keep meaning to plant a full garden, but I never do. This year I just accepted the fact. I planted some tomatoes in a self-watering planter and called it good. And now I literally reap the rewards.
