The Director had never happened to be in the kitchen when I opened a can of tuna.

As a result, he had never witnessed the performance.

*crack open tuna*

*cat appears out of thin air*

Duchess: Is that fish?! I want fish!! I love fish! It smells so good! PLEASE give me fish! I must have some fish! OMG I HAVE NOT EATEN IN THREE WEEKS AND I WILL KEEL OVER DEAD IF I DON’T GET FISH RIGHT THIS MINUTE!!!

*accompanied by weaving around my legs, stretching up toward the counter, and general feline drama and histrionics*

Me: Here, just a little.

Duchess: NOM NOM NOM MOAR PLZ

The Director: Do all cats meow that much when you have fish?

Me: Pretty much, yeah.

Yesterday The Director and I took Duchess to the vet. Nothing serious, just her annual checkup and rabies shot.

When I got the vet’s postcard reminding me to schedule her appointment, I realized—we’ve had her for just over a year now. The shelter said she was about nine months old when we adopted her; that means she’s now lived with us longer than she’s lived anywhere else her whole life.

In the last year she’s gone from an eight-pound adolescent to a well-proportioned, ten-pound adult. The vet says she can gain another pound or so; seems she has a large frame and is built to be a good-sized cat.

She didn’t like the vet trip, but she was far from terrified. She explored the examining room and responded when the vet tech petted her. Within ten minutes of arriving home, she was playing with her toys again.

This is the corner where Duchess keeps her toys.

Note that I do not say this is where I keep Duchess’ toys. I just give her the toys (or in some cases, she finds them herself). Duchess has chosen this corner as her toy storage. When she’s done playing with a toy, she brings it over here and puts it away.

I wish my kids were this tidy.
