Today Sparky handed me a few things addressed to NewCo. There were a couple of checks, and something from an address I didn’t recognize—probably a bill. I’m still getting bills from places I haven’t seen yet, as we get settled in with our vendors and loans and whatnot.

I opened the checks and applied them to invoices, then opened the third envelope… saw the phrase “we are representing First Bookkeeper…”

Folded it back up, stuffed it back in the envelope, and passed it back to Sparky to give to the Boss.

Yep, looks like she’s suing him.

Still hoping I don’t get deposed over this shit.

Um… No.

First Bookkeeper sent me an e-mail today—obviously she knows my e-mail address, because it used to be her e-mail address. She asked me to give her a call when I get a chance.

I don’t like to be rude, but I think having a private phone conversation with someone who has threatened to sue my boss would rank up there as one of the All-Time Stupid Ideas. Anything she wants to talk about can be discussed in archivable, ass-covering e-mail.

Not to mention the violation of my Stay The Hell Out Of It policy.

I am the third person to be in charge of bookkeeping for SecondCo. The first, I gather, used to keep the books before Boss bought the company. I don’t know why he decided not to keep her on as the bookkeeper for the new company; at the time, I had no reason to think I would ever be involved with SecondCo and I really didn’t pay much attention to it.

Apparently when she was laid off, First Bookkeeper presented Boss with an invoice which Boss felt was unreasonably high. He gave her a check for what he believed was a fair amount. She disagreed, and has been trying to get the remainder ever since. At least once before (that I know of) she’s come by the office and left another copy of her invoice for the Boss.

She’s also threatened to take him to court. I know this because, for some reason, the Boss copied me when he replied (basically, “Go ahead.”)

Yesterday she showed up at the office again, apparently with the intent of camping out in the lobby until he paid her.

He called the cops. And filed a harassment charge against her (seems she’s been here several other times I didn’t know about).

I don’t know the details. I don’t know what kind of agreement they had when he bought the company. I don’t know who’s right or wrong (my guess would be, “nobody.”)

Frankly, I don’t want to know. The most I’m willing to guess is that whatever she wants, she didn’t have it in writing beforehand, or she’d already be in court with a copy of it. I don’t want to get in the middle of this dispute; I had no say in the hiring or the firing, I had little evidence of the work she did or did not do before I took over (she was trying to leverage access to it in order to get paid—didn’t work, I just wound up scrambling to re-do it all).

She vacated the office before the cop showed up, but now she can be arrested if she returns.

I sure hope I don’t get deposed for this shit.
